The Colored Streets of Lisbon
2025-01-26
Whether it’s green, blue, yellow, or pink street, the many colorful streets of Lisbon are all great examples of place branding done well. Other than having a super clear distinction between them and their grayscale counterparts with their stand-out color schemes, they tick plenty of the boxes for great placemaking strategies. Here are some stand out examples:
Beyond the obvious color theme uniting the areas, they show great examples of creating a sense of enclosure in public spaces. Things like hanging plants or umbrellas to create a “pseudo ceiling” are great ways of making the space feel cozier by minimizing views of tall building facades and limited skylines.
By letting businesses take up space in the streets by placing table groups, art installations, or product showcases, they make the area inviting and encourage people to stop and hang out for a while.
By grouping and clustering similar businesses or themes together, they create opportunities for spillover effects from one business to another. In this way, a regular street that would otherwise be passed by without a second thought becomes a destination.
